Desktop Power Supply Symptoms: When the PSU Might Be Involved
A desktop power supply can cause confusing symptoms. The computer may shut down under load, turn on for a second and stop, refuse to start after a power cut, or run fans without booting. The PSU is a common suspect, but it is not the only possible cause.
Before replacing parts, check the basics. Try a different wall outlet, remove unnecessary USB devices, and confirm the rear power switch and cable are firmly seated. If there is a burnt smell, popping sound, visible damage, or recent liquid exposure, stop using the machine.
Why testing matters
A weak PSU can mimic motherboard, graphics card or storage problems. At the same time, a shorted motherboard or graphics card can make a good PSU shut down for protection. Swapping random parts can become costly and may not solve the real fault.
Gaming PCs and workstations can be more sensitive because the graphics card may draw much more power under load than at idle. A computer that works on the desktop but shuts down in games needs load-aware diagnosis.
Protect the data too
If the desktop contains important files, mention that before deep repair. Storage health should be considered if the computer has been cutting power repeatedly.
