Data Transfer From an Old Computer: What People Often Miss
Buying or setting up a replacement computer is easier when the data move is planned. Many people copy the Desktop and Documents folders, then later realise that email archives, browser bookmarks, accounting data, photos, templates or licence information were left behind.
Start by listing what the old computer is actually used for. Personal photos and documents are obvious. Business files, scanned paperwork, downloads, software databases and browser profiles are easier to overlook.
Apps are not the same as files
Installed programs usually need to be installed again on the new computer. Some store data in hidden folders or require export tools. Email clients, accounting packages and design software deserve extra care before the old computer is wiped or recycled.
If the old computer is failing, prioritise the most important data instead of spending time making the transfer tidy. A slow or unstable drive can worsen during long copying sessions.
Check the transfer before retiring the old device
Open sample files on the new computer. Check photos, documents, PDFs, spreadsheets and any business software data. Confirm that backups are working after the move.
AEPC / AKL East PC can help Auckland customers with data transfer, storage checks and replacement computer setup. We can also advise when a failing old drive needs data recovery rather than normal copying.
