Computer Freezes When an External Drive Is Connected
If Windows freezes as soon as an external drive is connected, the drive itself may be struggling. File Explorer can hang while trying to read a damaged file system or a failing storage device. This is a warning sign, not just a Windows inconvenience.
Try a different USB cable or port only if the drive makes no unusual sounds. If it clicks, beeps, disconnects repeatedly or becomes very hot, stop testing. Repeated connection attempts can make data recovery harder.
Do not format the drive
Windows may ask to format the disk. If you need the files, do not accept that prompt. Formatting does not fix data access; it changes the structure of the drive and can reduce recovery options.
Also avoid running repair commands before the drive condition is known. Some commands write changes to the disk.
Computer or drive?
If other USB devices work normally and the freeze happens only with one drive, focus on that drive. If every USB device behaves badly, the computer's USB controller, drivers or power delivery may be involved.
