Computer Will Not Wake From Sleep? Power, Driver or Windows Issue
A computer that will not wake from sleep can feel random. The screen stays black, fans spin, the keyboard lights up, or the machine needs a forced shutdown. This can be caused by Windows power settings, graphics drivers, USB devices, firmware or hardware instability.
Start by noting whether the problem happens after a short sleep, overnight, on battery, on charger, or only with a dock connected. The pattern helps narrow the cause.
Forced shutdowns have side effects
Holding the power button repeatedly may be necessary in the moment, but it can interrupt Windows writes and increase the chance of file system problems. If the issue happens often, it should be diagnosed rather than treated as normal.
External devices can also trigger sleep issues. USB hubs, docks, external drives and monitors may be involved, especially after updates.
When hardware is involved
A weak battery, failing SSD, unstable memory or overheating can make sleep and wake unreliable. If the computer was slow or crashing before the sleep issue, check overall health too.
