Disk Asking To Be Formatted? Do Not Click Yes If Files Matter
When Windows says a disk needs to be formatted before use, it is reporting that it cannot read the file system normally. The drive may be failing, the file system may be damaged, the partition table may be corrupted, or the device may have been unplugged during a write.
If you need the files, do not click yes. Formatting writes new structure to the drive and can make recovery more difficult. The drive may still contain data even though Windows cannot display it normally.
Stop and check symptoms
Was the drive dropped? Does it click or disconnect? Did the computer freeze when it was connected? Did the fault start after a power cut or unsafe removal? These details matter.
Trying multiple repair tools can also be risky if they write changes. A careful approach starts with assessing the drive condition and deciding whether recovery or backup should come first.
When it is an external drive
Try another cable only if there are no worrying noises. Avoid repeated connection attempts if the drive makes unusual sounds or gets hot.
