Workshop Dust and Computers: Why Maintenance Needs to Be Earlier
Computers used near workshops, garages or repair counters face a different environment from a clean office. Fine dust can enter vents, settle on fans, block heatsinks and affect ports. The computer may keep running until heat and instability appear suddenly.
Place desktops away from the floor where possible and keep vents clear. Laptops used around dust should not be left open in the workspace longer than needed. External keyboards can be easier to replace than a laptop keyboard full of debris.
Signs maintenance is overdue
Loud fans, warm cases, sudden shutdowns, USB ports that feel gritty, keyboards that miss presses and slow performance under load can all point to environmental buildup.
Cleaning should be careful. Compressed air can help, but uncontrolled fan spinning and loose debris can cause issues. For heavy buildup, disassembly may be needed.
Backups are part of maintenance
Workshop computers often hold invoices, photos, job records or customer notes. Hardware maintenance should go with backup checks.
