Access Denied After Moving a Drive? File Permissions Explained Simply
When an old drive is connected to a new computer, Windows may show "Access denied" or ask for permission to open user folders. This does not always mean the files are gone. It often means the files still belong to a user account from the previous Windows installation.
Permissions can usually be handled carefully, but the approach depends on whether the drive is healthy and whether encryption is involved. If BitLocker or device encryption was enabled, the recovery key may be required.
Do not change everything blindly
Taking ownership of folders can help in the right situation, but changing permissions across an unstable drive can add risk. If the drive is failing, data recovery or controlled copying should come first.
Business files may also have inherited permissions from a domain or work account, which changes the path.
Copy with care
Once access is available, verify that files open correctly after copying. Do not wipe the old drive until the data transfer has been checked.
