Laptop water damage: the golden 60 minutes (NZ guide)
The first 60 minutes: step-by-step (safe, no tools)
Minute 0–5: Stop power and isolate
-
Hold the power button to force shutdown.
-
Unplug the charger, USB drives, headphones, and any docks.
-
If it’s a detachable battery (rare on modern laptops), remove it gently. If not, skip—don’t pry.
Minute 5–10: Remove excess liquid
-
Place the laptop on a towel.
-
Blot visible liquid with a lint-free cloth or paper towel. Don’t wipe (wiping pushes liquid deeper).
-
If the spill was sugary or sticky (soft drink, juice, wine), note it—these leave residues that must be professionally cleaned.
Minute 10–20: Drain position
-
Open the laptop to a comfortable angle and place it keyboard-down like an inverted “V” (tent position) on a towel, or over the edge of a table so liquid can drain away from the screen and motherboard.
Minute 20–40: Safe drying environment
-
Move to a dry, room-temperature spot with good airflow.
-
Use a fan blowing gently across (not into) the keyboard.
-
Do not use heat sources (hairdryer, heater, sunlight, oven)—they warp parts and bake in minerals.
Minute 40–60: Protect data and plan next steps
-
Do not power on. Corrosion and shorts can worsen with every attempt.
-
If critical data is at risk, note the time, liquid type, and what you did—this helps our technicians triage faster.
-
Contact AEPC for same-day diagnostics and board-safe cleaning.
Real-world Auckland scenarios we see at AEPC
-
Flat white over the keyboard: Looks fine at first, then keys stick and the trackpad clicks by itself. Hidden milk sugars corrode the keyboard circuit within days. Early cleaning saves the board.
-
Backpack + rain: Water seeps in around vents. Device boots, then randomly shuts down the next day. That’s moisture bridging power lines on the board—immediate disassembly and alcohol bath (done by pros) prevents lasting damage.
-
Sparkling water spill: “It’s only water!”—but minerals still leave conductive residue. We often recover these fully if brought in within 24 hours.
Quick self-checks & tips (no tools, safe)
-
Sticky keys or ghost clicks? Don’t keep using it; residues spread.
-
Speakers buzzing or muffled? Liquid may have reached the speakers—keep volume low and power down.
-
Screen shows lines/flicker? Turn off immediately; liquid may be near display connectors.
-
It seems fine right now? Delayed failure is common. Corrosion can appear hours to days later.
When to call a pro (draw the line here)
-
Any sugary, milky, alcoholic, or salty liquid.
-
The laptop was powered on during the spill.
-
You see charging or battery warnings after a spill.
-
You rely on the laptop for work, study, or family photos—don’t gamble with data.
-
You’re considering opening it yourself—modern laptops use fragile connectors; DIY can turn a cleanable job into board damage.

-
Laptop sleeve inside your bag—Auckland’s weather can switch fast.
-
Keep liquids on a different surface level than your laptop.
-
Consider cloud backup or an external drive—spills are often data disasters, not just hardware ones.
-
Power off and unplug before packing into a rain-soaked backpack.

FAQ
Q1: Can I put my laptop in rice?
A: No. Rice doesn’t remove conductive residues and dust can enter vents. Proper cleaning is needed.
Q2: How long should I wait before turning it back on?
A: Don’t. Powering on without cleaning risks permanent damage. Bring it in—our same-day triage tells you when it’s safe.
Q3: Is water less harmful than coffee or soda?
A: Plain water is less harmful than sugary or salty liquids, but minerals still corrode. All spills deserve a check.
Q4: My keyboard works but some keys are sticky—can I just replace the keyboard?
A: Possibly, but stickiness often means residue below the keyboard. We inspect the board and connectors first to prevent repeat failures.
Q5: Will I lose my data?
A: Most customers keep their data when they power down quickly and seek prompt service. We prioritise data through the process.
Q6: What if it was rain, not a drink?
A: Treat as a spill. Rain can carry contaminants. Dry externally, power down, and get a professional clean.
Q7: Is a hairdryer on cool okay?
A: Avoid directed airflow into vents—it can push moisture deeper. A room fan across the surface is safer.
Q8: Do you service gaming laptops and MacBooks?
A: Yes—we handle mainstream Windows laptops, gaming models, and MacBooks with model-specific procedures.
