What To Back Up Before a Windows Reinstall
Reinstalling Windows can be useful when the system is badly damaged or overloaded, but it should not be the first step if important files are scattered across the computer. A reinstall changes the software environment and can remove apps, settings and some data depending on the option chosen.
Before reinstalling, look beyond the Desktop and Documents folders. Many people keep files in Downloads, Pictures, browser profiles, accounting software folders, email archives, game saves, project folders and cloud sync locations that may not be fully online.
Software data is easy to miss
Business and study software often stores data inside its own folders. Invoice tools, design apps, email clients and database programs may need proper export rather than simple file copying. Browser bookmarks and saved passwords also need attention, especially when the user is unsure of account logins.
If the drive is failing, do not spend hours trying to organise a perfect backup. Copy the most important files first or ask for a data-first check.
Check the reason for reinstalling
A reinstall will not fix a bad SSD, overheating laptop, failing RAM or power fault. If Windows problems appear alongside freezes, clicking drives, blue screens or sudden shutdowns, hardware diagnosis should happen before software work.
