Laptop Only Runs on the Charger? Battery Is Not the Only Suspect
When a laptop works on the charger but turns off as soon as it is unplugged, the battery is the obvious suspect. Sometimes that is correct. Other times the fault involves the battery connector, charging circuit, firmware reporting or a previous liquid exposure issue.
Do not assume a new battery is the answer until the symptoms are checked. A battery that is not detected, charges to a strange percentage, drains suddenly or causes the laptop to shut down under load can point to different faults.
Safety signs come first
If the battery is swollen, the trackpad is lifting, or the case has opened slightly, stop charging the laptop and avoid pressing the case flat. Swollen batteries should be handled carefully and removed under controlled conditions.
If there was a spill or drop before the charging issue, mention it. Battery and charging symptoms can be the first visible sign of board-level damage.
What helps the inspection
Bring the original charger if possible. Note how long the laptop runs unplugged, whether the battery percentage changes, and whether any warning appears in Windows. Photos of the model and charger label are helpful.
