Malware Symptoms Without Panic: What To Check First
Not every slow computer has malware, and not every pop-up means the machine is fully compromised. But suspicious browser redirects, fake virus warnings, unknown extensions, new toolbars and unexpected login prompts should be treated carefully.
Do not call phone numbers shown in pop-up warnings. Do not install remote support tools from a warning page. Close the browser if you can, disconnect from the internet if the situation feels active, and avoid entering passwords until the computer is checked.
Look for recent changes
Many browser hijacks begin after installing free software, clicking fake download buttons or allowing notifications from a website. Check whether the issue happens in one browser or across all browsers. If banking, email or business accounts were used during the incident, account security may need attention too.
Performance issues can also come from storage, heat or Windows corruption, so malware is only one possibility.
Protect data and accounts
Backups matter before deep cleanup. If a drive is failing, malware removal will not solve the underlying hardware risk.
