OneDrive Sync Problems: Why Cloud Sync Is Not Always a Backup
OneDrive and other cloud sync tools are helpful, but they are not the same as a complete backup plan. Sync keeps folders aligned across devices. That means mistakes, deletions or corrupted files can sometimes sync too.
When OneDrive shows red crosses, stuck syncing, duplicate folders or missing Desktop files, avoid making big cleanup changes until you understand what is local, online-only and backed up elsewhere.
Common confusion points
Files may appear on the computer without being fully downloaded. Other files may exist only locally if they were saved outside synced folders. A new computer may look empty until the correct account is signed in and sync is allowed to finish.
Business users should be careful with accounting folders, email archives and software databases. Some applications do not behave well when their live data is stored directly inside sync folders.
Before resetting a PC
Confirm that important files can be opened from another device or web browser. Do not assume sync is complete because the icon looks familiar.
