Lines on the Screen: Monitor, Cable, Graphics or Panel?
Lines on a screen can be caused by the display panel, cable, graphics card, monitor input, laptop display cable or driver. The first step is to identify whether the issue follows the screen or the computer.
For desktops, try another cable and another monitor if available. Check whether lines appear before Windows loads. For laptops, test an external monitor. If the external monitor is clean while the laptop screen shows lines, the laptop display path is more likely.
Movement gives clues
If lines change when a laptop lid moves, the display cable or hinge area may be stressed. If lines appear only under gaming load, graphics card heat or driver issues may be involved. If a monitor shows lines with multiple computers, the monitor itself may be failing.
Avoid twisting the screen to make the fault appear; this can worsen cable or panel damage.
When to repair
Screen faults can be part replacement, cable reseating, driver correction or deeper board diagnosis. Guessing from the line pattern alone is not always enough.
