Old Family PC Will Not Start? Think About Photos Before Repair
An old family computer may not seem valuable as hardware, but the files inside can matter a lot. Photos, videos, scanned documents, family history files and old email archives may exist only on that machine.
If the computer no longer starts, avoid repeated power cycling, especially if it has an old hard drive. Clicking, slow spin-up or freezing can point to storage trouble. Repairing Windows is less important than protecting the files if the data is the real priority.
Old drives need care
Mechanical hard drives can become fragile with age. Removing a drive and connecting it externally may work in some cases, but if it clicks or asks to be formatted, stop. Normal copying and recovery are different processes.
Old computers may also use outdated connectors or operating systems, so the access path may not be obvious.
Tell the story
Useful details include when the PC last worked, what files matter, whether it was stored in a garage or damp area, and whether there were previous repair attempts.
