Reinstalling Windows Without Losing Files: Slow Down First
Reinstalling Windows can solve some software problems, but the choices matter. A reset, repair install, clean install and recovery image do not have the same effect on files, apps and settings. If the computer contains important data, slow down before choosing an option.
First, confirm what needs to be saved. Documents and photos are obvious, but email archives, browser bookmarks, accounting data, downloads and software project folders are easy to miss.
Check storage health
If Windows is being reinstalled because the computer is freezing, showing disk errors or looping into repair, the drive may be the real issue. Installing Windows on a failing drive can waste time and risk data.
If BitLocker or device encryption is active, recovery key access may also matter during repair.
Apps need planning
Installed programs usually need reinstalling after a clean install. Make sure licences, installers and account access are available.
