Laptop Has a Burning Smell? Stop Using It Until Checked
A burning smell from a laptop should not be ignored. It may come from dust heating near the fan, a failing charger, damaged charging port, battery issue, shorted component or liquid residue. The safe response is to turn the laptop off, unplug the charger and avoid further use until it is checked.
Do not keep charging it to see whether the smell returns. If the battery is swollen, the case is hot, or there was a popping sound, handle the device carefully.
Where the smell comes from matters
A smell near the charger brick is different from a smell near the laptop port or keyboard. A dusty fan smell may appear under load, while electrical faults can appear immediately when power is connected.
Take note of what the laptop was doing when the smell appeared: charging, gaming, video call, update, or idle.
Data and safety
If important files are inside, mention that before repair. The safest plan may involve inspection before powering the laptop again.
