Before Selling or Recycling an Old PC: Data Wipe Comes First
Before selling, donating or recycling an old computer, think about the data first. Deleting files or emptying the recycle bin is not the same as securely preparing the storage. Personal photos, documents, browser data, saved passwords and business files may still be recoverable in some situations.
The right method depends on the storage type and whether you need to keep a backup. SSDs, hard drives and encrypted devices may need different handling.
Back up before wiping
Make sure important files have been copied and opened on another device. Check email archives, browser bookmarks, accounting files and photos before wiping the computer.
If the computer is not working, data recovery or drive removal may be needed before disposal decisions.
Account sign-out matters
Remove or sign out of cloud accounts, device management, browser profiles and software licences where appropriate. For business devices, follow internal privacy rules.
