Desktop Motherboard M.2 Slot: Cracked storage socket joint | Auckland
Pattern to record: The drive appears only when pressure changes near the connector.
Identify the connection
Read the motherboard’s slot table before moving an M.2 drive. Slots can differ in SATA/NVMe support, length and shared lanes, so a working drive in one socket need not work in every socket. One possible explanation is that mechanical stress has separated a signal or ground joint from the board.
Protect the drive
Do not force an M.2 module into an incompatible keyed slot. Pressing on a powered board can create additional shorts.
Workshop checks for this path
- Check board lane-sharing rules, drive keying and firmware configuration.
- Inspect anchor and signal joints under magnification with power removed.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, repair the confirmed joint and restore mechanical support. Verification should cover all configured slots, cold boot, sustained transfer, restart and temperature.
