Desktop Motherboard M.2 Slot: SATA interface mode mismatch | Auckland
Pattern to record: Firmware sees the device but the installed system will not boot after a settings change.
Identify the connection
Read the motherboard’s slot table before moving an M.2 drive. Slots can differ in SATA/NVMe support, length and shared lanes, so a working drive in one socket need not work in every socket. One possible explanation is that the controller setting does not match the operating-system driver or drive type.
Protect the drive
Do not force an M.2 module into an incompatible keyed slot. Reinitialising the disk is unnecessary and risks data.
Workshop checks for this path
- Check board lane-sharing rules, drive keying and firmware configuration.
- Record original mode and compare driver requirements without modifying the volume.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, restore the compatible mode or prepare a safe driver transition. Verification should cover all configured slots, cold boot, sustained transfer, restart and temperature.
