PC Won't Boot After an Upgrade? Compatibility Checks
If a desktop worked before a CPU, RAM, graphics card or power-supply upgrade and now will not boot, start with the changed part and its requirements. A connector fitting into place does not establish compatibility. The aim is to identify a documented mismatch before buying more components or changing firmware.
Build a short before-and-after list
Record the motherboard's exact model and revision, the old and new component part numbers, and everything changed during installation. Include the power-supply model and whether any modular cables were reused. Use invoices, packaging or existing records; do not dismantle the PC simply to complete the list.
Check the motherboard manufacturer's support information
- CPU: Look up the exact processor on the board's CPU support list, including any minimum BIOS version. Matching the socket name alone is not enough.
- Memory: Check the supported memory specification, capacity and module arrangement. Compare the full kit part number with the manufacturer's compatibility information rather than relying only on its advertised speed.
- Display output: A motherboard video socket is not proof that the fitted processor provides integrated graphics. Confirm the processor's capabilities and which output should drive the monitor.
ASUS illustrates these checks in its no-power, no-boot and no-display guide. Owners of other brands should use their own model's support page and manual. Do not copy a BIOS file or settings from a similarly named board.
Do not guess about modular PSU cables
If the power supply was changed and cable compatibility is uncertain, leave the PC unplugged. Verify each cable against the exact PSU manufacturer's information. For example, Corsair states that its specified Type-4 12VHPWR cable is not compatible with Type-5 PSUs in its cable compatibility guidance. That example is not a compatibility rule for other cables or brands. Never force a connector or open the power supply.
Safe checks before arranging help
With no signs of damage, check the monitor input and the external display connection. Note any diagnostic light or message already observed. Do not repeatedly swap components or start the machine if there is a burning smell, damaged connector or uncertain power cable. Internal checks require proper power isolation and handling precautions.
A BIOS update is a planned procedure, not a generic first step. First establish whether one is required for the exact CPU and board, whether the board supports the necessary update method, and whether the system can perform it safely. Do not interrupt an update already in progress. Seek help if the requirements are unclear.
What to send a technician
Send the before-and-after parts list, the last known BIOS version if available, and whether the PC has ever started successfully with the new part. Describe whether there is no power, power with no image, or an operating-system error. These are different faults. A safe return to a known supported configuration can be considered during diagnosis; it is not proof that every new part is defective.
