Desktop PC Starts Then Stops: Safe No-Boot Checks
A brief fan movement, repeated restart or black screen does not identify a failed motherboard power sequence. Several faults can look similar from outside the case. Record the point where startup stops before deciding whether the problem involves power, hardware initialisation, the display or loading the operating system.
Describe the startup stage, not just 'it is dead'
- No visible response: Nothing obvious happens when the power button is pressed.
- Starts and stops: Fans or lights appear briefly, then the system switches off or repeats the cycle.
- Stays on with no image: Fans continue, but the screen remains blank.
- Shows a logo or message: Record the exact text and whether the firmware setup screen or Windows appears.
These descriptions help narrow the investigation. They do not, by themselves, prove that the PSU, CPU, memory or motherboard must be replaced.
External checks you can make safely
If there is smoke, a burning smell, liquid exposure, scorching or a damaged mains cable, do not try another startup. Disconnect power only if safe to do so and seek appropriate help. Do not keep resetting an electrical protection device that trips when the PC is connected.
Otherwise, check that the external power cable is secure, the normal PSU power switch is on, and the monitor has the correct input selected. With the PC switched off, remove non-essential external USB accessories before a basic check. Keep the case closed: do not bridge pins, probe live connectors, open the PSU or attempt board-level measurements.
Use diagnostic lights as clues
Some motherboards provide CPU, DRAM, VGA or BOOT indicators; others use beep patterns or numeric codes. Record the label or complete pattern, not only the colour. A light that remains on is more useful than an unlabelled photograph of a brief flash. Read the manual for the exact board, because indicators and their meanings vary.
For supported ASUS boards, the official Q-LED troubleshooting guide explains the component groups associated with its indicators. It should not be applied as a code table for another manufacturer's board. A diagnostic indicator directs further checks; do not use it as a shopping list.
When to stop testing
Stop if the desktop keeps cycling, shuts off again after the basic external checks, or changed behaviour immediately after internal work. Do not try a firmware flash as a general cure for unexplained power loss. If a firmware update is already running, follow its manufacturer instructions and do not interrupt it merely because the display is blank.
What a repair assessment should answer
Ask what evidence separates a power-supply problem from a connection, configuration or board fault. A claimed power-sequencing fault needs model-appropriate technical evidence; a twitching fan is not enough. Ask what the proposed repair changes and how startup and normal use will be checked afterwards.
Provide the motherboard and PSU models, recent upgrades or outages, the approximate time before shutdown, and any messages or diagnostic patterns already observed. Mention important files before testing. Reinstalling Windows is not a substitute for investigating a PC that cannot complete hardware startup.
