Desktop PC BIOS Firmware: Incorrect storage controller mode | Auckland
Pattern to record: The operating system becomes inaccessible immediately after a setting change.
Record the boot configuration
Use the motherboard model and revision, not just the PC case brand, to select firmware documentation. Record POST indicators and recently changed memory, graphics or storage before returning settings to a documented baseline. One possible explanation is that AHCI, RAID or vendor storage settings no longer match the installed driver.
Preserve recovery options
Firmware updates require the exact motherboard model and stable power. Switching modes repeatedly can confuse diagnosis but does not repair a failing drive.
Firmware and hardware checks
- Reduce to known hardware, inspect POST indications and compare saved settings with board documentation.
- Record the original controller mode and confirm drive visibility before Windows repair.
Recovery and startup checks
If the checks support this cause, restore the matching mode or prepare the correct driver transition safely. Verification should cover cold start, restart, memory training, storage, expansion cards and saved settings.
