Desktop PC BIOS Firmware: TPM state conflict | Auckland
Pattern to record: A recovery-key prompt follows a firmware or hardware change.
Record the boot configuration
Use the motherboard model and revision, not just the PC case brand, to select firmware documentation. Record POST indicators and recently changed memory, graphics or storage before returning settings to a documented baseline. One possible explanation is that stored platform measurements no longer match encryption or security expectations.
Preserve recovery options
Firmware updates require the exact motherboard model and stable power. Clearing the TPM without keys can lock away encrypted data.
Firmware and hardware checks
- Reduce to known hardware, inspect POST indications and compare saved settings with board documentation.
- Confirm recovery credentials and review the precise change before resetting anything.
Recovery and startup checks
If the checks support this cause, restore the intended firmware state or re-enrol security using authorised credentials. Verification should cover cold start, restart, memory training, storage, expansion cards and saved settings.
