Docking Station Ethernet System: Network surge damage | Auckland
Pattern to record: The port failed after a storm, PoE incident or cabling event.
Separate the adapter from the network
Dock Ethernet shares the dock’s host connection and power arrangement. Compare network-only use with displays and storage active, then distinguish a disappearing USB device from a live adapter with no Ethernet link. One possible explanation is that transient energy has shorted or opened protection components near the port.
Link and configuration checks
- Separate dock firmware, host USB-C link, power and the network side using controlled comparisons.
- Inspect protection devices and rail resistance before connecting more equipment.
Before internal work
Use the dock's correct power supply during diagnosis. Reconnecting to suspect cabling can damage repaired hardware.
Verify the network path
If the checks support this cause, replace damaged protection and controller components after isolating the fault. Verification should cover link speed, displays plus network load, sleep, undock, redock and restart.
For an assessment of your docked laptop, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
