Gaming Laptop High-Power DC Input: Shorted input capacitor | Auckland
Pattern to record: The adapter protection trips immediately when connected to the computer.
Identify the input design
A gaming laptop may run normally at the desktop yet exceed the available adapter power during a combined CPU and GPU workload. Record the original adapter model and whether the failure occurs while gaming, charging, or both. One possible explanation is that a damaged filtering capacitor pulls the main input rail toward ground.
Stop before further damage
Do not continue a graphics load when the plug, jack or cable is overheating. Repeatedly reconnecting the adapter can worsen board damage.
Workshop checks
- Use the correct wattage adapter, monitor input stability under a controlled load and inspect the jack and cable for heat damage.
- Measure rail resistance with power removed and isolate the shorted section methodically.
Repair and power verification
If the checks support this cause, replace the confirmed failed capacitor and inspect nearby components for heat stress. Verification should cover idle charging, combined processor and graphics load, connector temperature and restart.
For an assessment of your gaming laptop, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
