Prepare a Recovery Handover When Hyper Backup Enters Restore Only
Restore Only is a significant Hyper Backup status, not simply a missed schedule. Synology explains that integrity checking can place a task in this state when corruption is found at the backup destination. Additional backup writes are stopped to avoid further damage. The status itself does not guarantee that every stored version remains restorable.
Preserve the task and its destination identity
Record the task name, destination type, archive path, time of the status change and the exact integrity-check error. Keep a screenshot of the task details and the relevant log entries. If a removable drive or remote NAS is involved, identify which device holds the archive so similarly named destinations cannot be confused.
Ask whether the backup archive was recently moved, renamed or modified outside Hyper Backup. Synology has a separate recovery branch for changes to the .hbk backup data. That history is useful to support staff, but it is not a reason to experiment with files inside the archive. Preserve the original location information and avoid manually rebuilding its internal structure.
Separate urgent recovery from future backup repair
Identify which important source files still exist and whether another independent backup is available. If the source storage is also unstable, repeated diagnostic activity may compete with recovering readable data. Give the technician both the source symptoms and the destination failure rather than treating them as unrelated incidents.
Arrange a controlled attempt to recover a needed sample or version into a separate location. Record what opened successfully and what failed; one recovered file is not proof that the full archive is healthy. Keep the old archive while the cause and recovery options are assessed.
Synology's resolution involves addressing the underlying problem before resuming a reliable backup arrangement. A replacement task may be part of that plan, but deleting the old destination first would remove evidence and possible recovery points. Agree on available space, retention and recovery acceptance before any archive is retired.
