Laptop Ethernet Interface: Link speed negotiation fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: The connection settles at 100 Mbps instead of gigabit or repeatedly renegotiates.
Separate the adapter from the network
Distinguish a built-in laptop Ethernet port from a USB adapter or dock. Record which adapter appears in the operating system and whether physical link remains up when network access fails. One possible explanation is that one cable pair or configuration prevents the highest supported Ethernet mode.
Link and configuration checks
- Compare cable, switch port, firmware detection and sustained transfer before opening the computer.
- Compare certified cable pairs, switch port and forced diagnostic modes.
Before internal work
Disconnect damaged network cables and docks before internal work. Forcing speed can hide a physical pair fault rather than solve it.
Verify the network path
If the checks support this cause, repair the failed pair, port or configuration and restore automatic negotiation. Verification should cover link at supported speed, local transfer, internet access, sleep and undocking.
