Check Case-Sensitive Filenames Before Moving Linux Work to Another System
A Linux project can contain both Report.txt and report.txt as separate files. A destination filesystem or service may treat those names as equivalent. Discovering the conflict during a hurried move risks choosing Replace without understanding which document would be lost.
Review the names before transferring
Keep the source intact and make an inventory of the project folders that matter. Look for names that differ only by capitalisation, including folder names. Open both files and identify their purpose; matching-looking names do not establish matching contents.
Test the actual destination using harmless copies in a temporary folder. Attempt to create two small sample files whose names differ only by case. If the destination refuses the second name, replaces the first, or silently changes a name, record that behaviour before transferring the real project.
Choose meaningful distinct names on a working copy, such as report-draft.txt and report-approved.txt, after checking the contents. Renaming files inside a project can affect links, scripts or application references, so update those references and test the project as a unit. Do not rename production assets merely because their names look untidy.
Verify both content and identity
Copy the prepared project instead of moving the only source. Ubuntu Files can interpret a drag as a move when both locations are on the same device; use an explicit Copy and Paste operation when preservation is the intention.
On the destination, compare the expected file list and open the previously conflicting files separately. Check a recognisable passage or other content marker in each. A total file count helps, but it does not prove that the right content survived under each name.
Open the project in the receiving application and test the links affected by renamed paths. Keep the source until this acceptance check is complete. If the destination cannot represent the required naming structure, choose a suitable transfer or archive arrangement with the recipient instead of repeatedly accepting overwrite prompts.
