macOS APFS Container: Encrypted APFS volume will not unlock
Pattern to record: The storage is detected but the encrypted APFS volume remains locked.
Identify the storage layer
APFS separates the physical device, container and individual volumes. Record which layer fails to appear or mount, and protect required files before changing container metadata or removing snapshots. An encrypted APFS volume requires its authorised unlock credentials; Windows TPM and BitLocker protector instructions do not describe this Mac volume.
Protect data before repair
A reinstall or erase is not a data-recovery first step. Erasing a locked volume does not recover the files inside it.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Protect the physical drive and inspect container, volume and snapshot structure before repair.
- Confirm the volume’s encryption setup and authorised password or recovery information before attempting metadata repair.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, use the supported Mac or APFS recovery path with valid credentials while preserving the original storage. Verification should cover mounting, startup, snapshots, file access, sleep and verified backup.
