Compare a Shortlist of Files With Peek Before Opening the Working Copy
Several files named draft, revised and final can make it difficult to choose the working copy. PowerToys Peek provides a quick preview of supported content from File Explorer. Use it to narrow a shortlist, then open the chosen document in its normal application for a proper check.
Create the shortlist in Explorer by selecting the files you actually want to compare. Keep their folder location visible. Files with the same name in a downloaded attachment folder and a shared project folder may belong to different stages of the work.
Move through a deliberate selection
Enable Peek in PowerToys and check its configured activation shortcut. Current Microsoft documentation uses Space as the default, while an existing installation may retain a different setting. Activate the preview with the selected files in Explorer.
Use the arrow keys to move through the previews. Microsoft notes that selecting multiple files limits this navigation to those selected items; otherwise navigation can include the current folder's files. That distinction helps keep an inspection focused on the versions you intended to compare.
Pin the preview window's size and position if changing image dimensions make the window jump around. This pin holds the preview frame steady; it does not mark a document as the approved version. Inspect the filename and available metadata alongside the content.
Confirm the working copy in its application
Look for a meaningful difference such as a revised heading, corrected diagram or extra page. A modification date alone does not prove that a file contains the agreed changes. Record the full path of the likely candidate rather than only its short name.
Use Open with or Enter to open the selected file in its default program, then check the parts relevant to the work. A successful preview does not establish that every feature, link or page will behave correctly in the application. Leave other candidates intact until the responsible person confirms which copy should be used; previewing is an identification step, not a reason to delete the rest.
