Prepare a Mac for Repair Without Handing Over Your Digital Life
A useful repair handover tells the technician how to reproduce the problem and which data must be protected. It does not require placing your Apple Account password in an email or leaving every personal session open.
Prepare evidence and a data decision
Write down the model, macOS version, exact symptom and the shortest sequence that triggers it. Note whether it occurs on battery, with a particular display, or only after waking. Bring the relevant charger or accessory when that is part of the fault.
If the Mac works reliably enough, complete a backup and confirm that important files are accessible. If it has liquid damage, unreliable storage or repeated shutdowns, explain the data priority before attempting a lengthy backup. Agree whether data recovery or normal repair comes first.
Close private documents and sign out of unrelated sessions you do not need for testing. Ask what access is required for the particular assessment. You can enter credentials yourself when appropriate; never publish passwords or recovery keys in a fault description.
Follow the instructions for your service route
Apple's current service preparation differs by macOS version: it describes Ready for Repair or Trade-In for macOS 27 and later, and Find My steps for macOS 26 and earlier. Follow the current instructions relevant to the provider and booked work rather than switching off protection days before you need to.
Apple also identifies FileVault or removing data as privacy options. Erasing is destructive and should only follow verified preservation of everything required and agreement that a clean machine suits the diagnostic task. Do not erase a Mac when the only copy of needed files is still inside it.
Keep your handover record and ask for the proposed scope before authorising changes. On return, test the original symptom with the same accessory and check access to the files you expected to retain.
