RAID Volume Metadata: Partition layout on a RAID virtual disk
Pattern to record: A partition tool reports an unexpected size or layout while the array configuration is uncertain.
Identify the storage layer
RAID metadata describes member order and array layout; it is separate from the file system inside the assembled volume. Record the controller, RAID level and physical drive order before import, rebuild or file-system repair. A partition table normally describes the logical disk presented by the array; interpreting a member as that disk can produce misleading results.
Protect data before repair
Do not initialise, reorder or rebuild uncertain members automatically. Do not write partition repairs to individual members as though they were independent disks.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Record drive order and controller details and image unstable members before importing anything.
- Preserve member order and establish the correct logical disk before comparing partition records on an image.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, recover the proven partition layout only after array geometry is established. Verification should cover array assembly, share access, redundancy state, restart and independent backup.
