Record a Short Mac Problem Video That a Technician Can Use
A short recording can show a problem that is difficult to describe, such as a menu that disappears or an app that repeatedly changes state. Prepare the demonstration so the useful evidence is visible and private material is excluded.
Choose the smallest useful recording
Close unrelated documents and messaging windows. Use sample data if it reproduces the issue. Write down the two or three actions that lead to the problem so you can demonstrate it without searching through confidential folders while recording.
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls. Choose a recording option, such as a selected portion of the screen, and check the destination under Options. Feature availability differs by macOS version; selected-window recording is documented for macOS Tahoe 26 and later.
If spoken explanation helps, select the intended microphone and make a brief test. Microphone recording and capturing the Mac's own system audio are separate capabilities. Apple's current guide lists built-in system-audio inclusion for macOS 27 and later; do not assume an older Mac recording contains every sound you hear.
Demonstrate and check the saved evidence
Start recording, perform the short sequence and stop once the fault is visible. Apple provides the menu-bar Stop button and Command-Control-Escape to end a recording. Avoid a long clip containing several unrelated experiments.
Open the saved video and watch it from beginning to end. Confirm that the pointer, error and timing are understandable, that any narration is audible and that no password, customer detail or private notification appears.
Keep a separate text note with the Mac model, macOS version, application version and whether the problem occurs consistently. A video supplies behaviour; those details supply context.
Share only the reviewed copy through the agreed channel. If the problem involves protected video content, recording restrictions may be intentional; do not treat a blank capture as proof that the display hardware failed.
