Show File Extensions Before Renaming or Opening a File
A file's extension is the part after the final dot in its name, such as .pdf or .xlsx. Windows uses that information when choosing an application. Changing the letters changes the filename; it does not rewrite the contents into a new format.
If a document is called report.pdf but contains something else, a PDF reader may reject it. Conversely, a valid document with an accidentally changed extension may fail to open through its usual shortcut. These situations need different responses from repairing the computer.
Make the whole name visible
In Windows 11 File Explorer, select View, Show, then File name extensions. Examine the complete name before editing it. Keep a copy of a valuable file before experimenting with names, particularly if the original source is unavailable.
If you know that only the extension was changed accidentally, restoring the original name may restore the expected association. Do not guess through a long list of extensions. Ask the sender or check the application that originally created the file.
For a genuine format conversion, use the originating application's Save As or Export function where supported. Choose the target format there and save a new file. A spreadsheet exported to PDF, for example, should be checked for page layout and missing columns; merely renaming the workbook would never perform that conversion.
Use visibility as a checking aid
An unexpected double extension deserves attention. A name that appears to describe an invoice but ends in an executable extension should not be opened just because its icon or first few words look familiar. Confirm unexpected attachments through a trusted channel.
After a legitimate conversion, open the result in the intended application and inspect the content. Keep the editable original if you may need to revise it later. Showing extensions makes these decisions clearer, but a plausible extension alone cannot establish that a downloaded file is safe or authentic.
