Read Drive Allocation and Health as Separate Fields in DSM 6.2 to 7.1.1
On a Synology system running DSM 6.2 through 7.1.1, a drive can have an allocation status and a separate health status. Synology's guidance for those versions uses Normal allocation to mean that DSM is installed and the drive belongs to a storage pool. That field is not a complete statement about the drive's physical condition.
Record the field name with its value
Open Storage Manager and inspect the relevant drive under HDD/SSD. Expand its details and check the available Health Info overview. Record the bay, model, allocation status and health status as separate entries. A maintenance note saying only drive normal loses the distinction that matters here.
Compare any alert with the same physical drive. Where serial numbers are needed to distinguish identical models, keep them in the private service record rather than a public screenshot. Do not remove a drive merely to read its label while the array is operating.
Synology's table also distinguishes Not Initialized, Initialized and Detected from an assigned drive. These labels describe configuration or recognised storage data; they are not instructions to initialise the disk. Existing data and array membership must be understood before any allocation action is chosen.
Preserve the warning history
The documented Healthy description includes situations where a warning has been suppressed or disabled. Check recent alerts and the details available for the installed version before interpreting a green indicator as absence of all previous concerns. Keep timestamps with the observations so a technician can compare the display with earlier events.
If the health field or logs report a problem, assess readable data and backup availability before selecting hardware tests or replacement steps. This article is about interpreting the older interface, not approving a rebuild. For later DSM versions, use the current status definitions shown by the system and the corresponding vendor documentation. Finish the handover with the exact version and both status fields so advice is based on the interface actually in use.
