USB Ethernet Adapter: Link speed negotiation fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: The connection settles at 100 Mbps instead of gigabit or repeatedly renegotiates.
Separate the adapter from the network
The adapter depends on two connections: USB to the computer and Ethernet to the switch. Note which one disappears during the fault and test the adapter directly before adding a hub or dock. One possible explanation is that one cable pair or configuration prevents the highest supported Ethernet mode.
Link and configuration checks
- Compare USB ports, cable, network load and driver behaviour on another computer.
- Compare certified cable pairs, switch port and forced diagnostic modes.
Before internal work
Stop using an adapter that overheats or has a damaged cable. Forcing speed can hide a physical pair fault rather than solve it.
Verify the network path
If the checks support this cause, repair the failed pair, port or configuration and restore automatic negotiation. Verification should cover supported link speed, sustained transfer, sleep, reconnect and another host.
