Black Screen After Login: Windows, Driver or Display Fault?
A black screen after login is different from a computer with no display at all. If the login screen appears but the desktop does not, Windows may be loading into a broken profile, bad graphics driver, stuck startup app or corrupted system state.
Before resetting the computer, think about the files and account access. Some repair paths preserve data; others change the user profile or remove apps. If the computer has important documents, backup should come before aggressive fixes.
Useful clues
Does the mouse cursor appear? Can Task Manager open? Does the screen work in Safe Mode? Does an external monitor behave differently? Did the issue begin after a driver update, Windows update or new software installation?
If the laptop display is black but an external monitor works, the issue may be display hardware rather than Windows. If both screens fail after login, software or graphics output is more likely.
Do not ignore storage health
A damaged drive can corrupt Windows profiles and startup files. If the machine was slow or freezing before the black screen appeared, storage should be checked.
