Laptop Camera Not Working? Check Privacy, Drivers and Hardware
A laptop camera failure can be awkward when video calls are part of work or study. The cause may be simple, such as privacy settings, app permissions or a physical camera shutter. It can also be driver-related or caused by cable damage near the screen hinge.
Start by testing the camera in more than one app. If it fails in every app, check Windows privacy permissions and Device Manager. If only one meeting app fails, the issue may be app settings rather than the laptop itself.
Hardware clues
If the camera issue began after a screen repair, hinge damage, drop or liquid exposure, mention that. Camera cables often run through the display assembly, so hinge stress can affect webcam, microphone, Wi-Fi antennas or display behaviour.
Do not install random driver tools. Use the laptop manufacturer's support page or have the driver state checked properly.
When diagnosis helps
If Windows cannot detect the camera, the device disappears and returns, or the camera works only at certain lid angles, hardware inspection may be needed.
