Business Computer Handover: Data Transfer Without Losing Context
When a business computer is handed from one person to another, the job is more than copying documents. Browser profiles, email archives, shared drive access, accounting shortcuts, templates, saved printers and software licences may all matter.
Start by separating business data from personal data. Avoid sharing passwords casually. Use proper account handover where possible, especially for email, cloud storage and accounting tools.
Check where files live
Files may be on the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, cloud sync folders, external drives or inside software data folders. A staff member may also have created local folders that are not part of shared storage.
Before wiping or reassigning the computer, confirm that important files open from the new account or new device.
Security and backups
Remove access that is no longer needed and make sure current business data is backed up. A rushed handover can create both data loss and privacy problems.
