BitLocker-Encrypted Windows Volume: Corrupted directory index | Auckland
Pattern to record: One folder fails to open while other areas remain accessible.
Identify the storage layer
BitLocker is an encryption layer, not a file system. The NTFS-specific checks here apply only after the authorised volume is unlocked and its underlying format is confirmed; retain the recovery key before firmware or hardware changes. One possible explanation is that the structure mapping names to file records contains invalid entries.
Protect data before repair
Never clear TPM or format the volume while recovery information is uncertain. Copying new files onto the volume may overwrite recoverable metadata.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Confirm ownership and recovery credentials before testing metadata or hardware changes.
- Compare directory records on an image and recover valuable files before rebuilding indexes.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, repair the index or restore the affected directory from backup. Verification should cover authorised unlock, restart, file access, backup and recovery-key documentation.
