BitLocker-Encrypted Windows Volume: Damaged allocation map | Auckland
Pattern to record: Free space is implausible or files overlap and report read errors.
Identify the storage layer
BitLocker is an encryption layer, not a file system. The NTFS-specific checks here apply only after the authorised volume is unlocked and its underlying format is confirmed; retain the recovery key before firmware or hardware changes. One possible explanation is that used and free space records no longer agree with actual file extents.
Protect data before repair
Never clear TPM or format the volume while recovery information is uncertain. Continuing normal writes can allocate blocks still belonging to files.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Confirm ownership and recovery credentials before testing metadata or hardware changes.
- Validate allocation structures against file records on a clone.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, rebuild the allocation metadata or recover files to a clean volume. Verification should cover authorised unlock, restart, file access, backup and recovery-key documentation.
