Use Calc Goal Seek to Find One Input Without Replacing the Formula
Suppose a printing task uses three sheets per pack plus six setup sheets. You want to know how many packs fit a target of ninety sheets. Calc's Goal Seek can vary one input while leaving the formula intact. The important preparation is identifying which cell is allowed to change.
Build a transparent small model
In a disposable sheet, put a starting pack count of 10 in B1 and enter =3*B1+6 in B2. Label both cells with their meaning and units. B2 should initially show 36. This simple result can be checked without trusting an unfamiliar workbook.
Select B2 and open Tools, Goal Seek. The formula reference should point to B2, the target should be 90, and the variable reference should point to B1. The variable is the existing input used by the formula, not a blank output cell beside it.
Run the search and inspect the proposed result before accepting it. For this example, the expected input is 28: three times twenty-eight plus six equals ninety. Acceptance writes the found input into the variable cell. Keep the original starting value if you need to return to the earlier model.
Separate an equation result from a usable plan
Check the formula bar afterward. B2 should still contain the formula, and B1 should contain the accepted input. Recalculate the result independently and inspect other outputs that use B1 before applying the same technique to a working document.
A target of 91 would require a fractional pack in this model. That can be a mathematically meaningful answer without being a usable printing instruction. Do not round it silently and continue claiming that the target was met exactly.
If several inputs must change together or quantities need explicit whole-number limits, this single-input exercise is insufficient. Record those requirements before choosing another modelling method. Goal Seek finds a value for the relationship you supplied; it does not establish that the relationship describes the real task correctly.
