Change a Known Windows Hello PIN and Test the Correct Sign-In Method
Changing a Windows Hello PIN is a useful task when someone may have seen you enter it or you simply want a different device sign-in code. This guide assumes you are already signed in to your own Windows account and know the current PIN.
First confirm the account you are using, especially on a shared PC. A successful change in the wrong account will not update the sign-in method you intended to change. Save open work and choose a private place for the task.
Change the PIN through Windows settings
Open Settings, Accounts, Sign-in options. Expand PIN (Windows Hello), select Change PIN and follow the prompts. Microsoft requires the old PIN for this change. Enter the new value privately and follow any complexity requirements displayed by Windows or your organisation.
The Windows Hello PIN is different from the Microsoft account password. Changing one should not be treated as a change to the other. If your concern is a compromised online account password, use that account’s separate security procedure.
If you do not know the existing PIN, stop using this known-PIN workflow. Microsoft provides I forgot my PIN with account verification; repeated guesses are not an alternative to that verification.
Verify the method you actually changed
Once Windows confirms the change, lock the PC. At sign-in, select the intended account and the PIN option, then enter the new PIN. Be deliberate about this: a fingerprint or facial sign-in can get you back into Windows without testing the new code at all.
Confirm that the expected desktop and files are present. If a sign-in fails, read the selected method and account before trying again; a password field and a PIN field expect different credentials.
Keep recovery information accessible through your approved secure method. Do not put the new PIN in a repair note, screenshot or message to another person. Your completion record only needs to say that the intended account’s PIN was changed and tested.
