Check the Scanner Path Before Scanning a Passport or Delicate Original
A carrier sheet is a model-specific accessory, not a universal protective envelope. Before scanning a passport, thin receipt or delicate photograph through a feeder, confirm that the complete combination of original, scanner path and carrier is supported.
Establish eligibility first
Find the scanner's instructions for that type of original. Check permitted dimensions, thickness and condition, and identify whether the straight or curved paper path is required. An ordinary office document feeder may not be designed for a bound passport at all.
Epson's DS-C490 guide, for example, lists particular carrier-sheet codes and permits only one carrier sheet in the straight path position. It describes a passport carrier as a protection option for that model and says not to use scratched carriers. Those details do not establish that another scanner can accept the same passport or sleeve.
Use the exact accessory specified for your model. A home-made plastic sleeve can differ in thickness, seams and detection features. Stop if compatibility is unclear rather than experimenting with the valuable original.
Protect the document and the resulting file
If a feeder route is unsuitable, use a supported flatbed or an appropriate document-capture service. Avoid forcing a bound item flat or pressing a scanner cover onto it. For fragile historical material, obtain suitable handling advice before attempting any capture.
With an approved feeder setup, follow the model's placement diagram and monitor the first scan. Stop using the path if the original catches, bends or encounters unexpected resistance; follow the jam instructions instead of pulling against the mechanism.
Inspect the saved image for the complete page, readable identifying details and unwanted reflections or carrier marks. Check the physical original afterwards as well. A readable image does not excuse damage to the source.
For identity documents, save the file to the intended private location and review which pages are actually required before sharing it. Remove unnecessary working copies through your normal document-handling process once the verified copy is safely retained.
