Choose a Recall Pause That Lasts for Your Confidential Work
A control labelled Pause until tomorrow has a time boundary. If your confidential work continues after midnight or across several days, establish how long snapshot saving should remain stopped before opening the material.
This concerns Recall preview on supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft describes it as optional, with snapshot saving off unless the user opts in. It saves periodic screen snapshots, rather than continuous video or audio. Check the account you are actually using.
Match the control to the duration
The Recall system-tray menu offers Pause until tomorrow. Microsoft says saving automatically resumes at 12:00 AM; a slash on its icon identifies the paused state. That is useful for a short interruption, but is not an indefinite pause.
For a longer interval, open Settings, Privacy & security, Recall & snapshots and set Save snapshots to Off. Complete the Windows Hello authentication requested for a settings change. Microsoft notes that the Recall tray icon is absent when this saving option is off.
Reopen the settings page to confirm the chosen state before starting the sensitive task. On a shared computer, do this within the appropriate user's session rather than assuming another person's preference controls yours.
Account for what was already saved
Stopping future saving and reviewing previously saved snapshots are separate decisions. Recall provides snapshot deletion controls on its settings page. If earlier material needs removal, inspect the available scope deliberately; do not describe a paused icon as proof that old content has disappeared.
Filters also need careful interpretation. Microsoft documents supported-browser requirements for website filtering and notes that related content can still appear elsewhere, such as browser history. A filter name is not a complete audit of every place a confidential detail might be visible.
Keep a simple note of the intended end of the pause or off period. When the task finishes, decide whether to resume saving, and verify the resulting setting. Avoid placing the confidential material itself in that note or in a screenshot sent for support.
