Decide Whether to Leave Windows 11 S Mode Before Installing a Desktop App
A Windows 11 computer in S mode restricts installation to applications from Microsoft Store. If a needed desktop application is unavailable there, leaving S mode may be required, but it should be a deliberate decision about the computer’s future use.
Microsoft states that switching out is free and one-way: you cannot turn S mode back on afterwards. Windows 11 S mode is available only with the Home edition. Do not treat the change as a temporary troubleshooting toggle.
Confirm the application requirement first
Identify the exact program and the feature you need. Check its publisher’s official Windows requirements and whether a suitable Microsoft Store version already exists. A similarly named listing is not evidence that it provides the same features.
Keep any existing documents backed up and confirm that the intended installer is from the legitimate publisher. Leaving S mode removes an installation restriction; it does not establish that every downloaded application or hardware driver is compatible.
On an organisation-managed computer, check with the administrator before proceeding. Microsoft notes that an organisation can choose to keep its devices in S mode. Do not use unofficial scripts to bypass that decision.
Use the official switch only after deciding
Open Microsoft’s linked switching instructions and use its Switch out of S mode link to reach the corresponding Microsoft Store page. Review the page name before selecting Get. Wait for the confirmation message that the switch has completed.
A prompt to buy a different Windows edition is a separate decision. Stop and recheck the route rather than paying merely because you expected a free S-mode switch.
After confirmation, follow the intended application publisher’s supported installation procedure. Open a disposable sample and test the particular feature that motivated the change, including any required peripheral or file format.
Keep the installer source and result with the computer’s setup notes. The decision is complete when the user understands the permanent change and the needed workflow has been verified, not simply when an installer is allowed to start.
