Place a Deco Satellite Where It Can Reach Both the Network and the Work Area
A wireless mesh satellite needs a useful connection back to the rest of the network as well as a useful connection to nearby devices. Placing it inside the weakest room can improve the signal bars on a laptop while leaving the satellite's own upstream path poor.
Start by marking the main unit, the work area and major obstacles on a simple floor plan. Choose two or three practical satellite positions between them. Consider power access, ventilation and a location where the equipment will not be knocked or covered.
Inspect the satellite's source connection
TP-Link's placement guide shows how to select a satellite in the Deco app and inspect its connection to the source unit. Use that observation when comparing positions. The laptop's Wi-Fi indicator describes its connection to an access point; it does not directly measure the satellite's upstream link.
Try an open position away from large metal objects and dense obstructions. Keep the test client at the actual desk while moving the satellite. Record each candidate position and the source-link indication so the comparison can be repeated.
Test the work done in the room
Run a representative, authorised task from the desk, such as opening a shared document or holding a private test call. Use similar conditions for each candidate. Note interruptions and responsiveness as well as any throughput measurement that matters to the work.
Check another important nearby location before settling on the best position. Improving one desk can leave a neighbouring room poorly served, and a brief test next to the satellite can conceal that tradeoff. Keep the smallest arrangement that meets the actual coverage needs.
If no practical wireless position provides a dependable source link, investigate a supported Ethernet backhaul route rather than repeatedly placing another unit in the same dead area. Finalise the position only after both the app's connection evidence and the client task are acceptable. Save the floor-plan note for future furniture or equipment changes that might alter the radio path.
