Desktop PC BIOS Firmware: Depleted RTC battery | Auckland
Pattern to record: Time and firmware settings reset after mains or main-battery power is removed.
Record the boot configuration
Use the motherboard model and revision, not just the PC case brand, to select firmware documentation. Record POST indicators and recently changed memory, graphics or storage before returning settings to a documented baseline. One possible explanation is that the low-power cell can no longer retain clock and setup data.
Preserve recovery options
Firmware updates require the exact motherboard model and stable power. Some laptops use rechargeable or cabled cells that must not be substituted blindly.
Firmware and hardware checks
- Reduce to known hardware, inspect POST indications and compare saved settings with board documentation.
- Measure the cell and confirm settings persist with a known replacement.
Recovery and startup checks
If the checks support this cause, replace the correct cell and restore documented settings. Verification should cover cold start, restart, memory training, storage, expansion cards and saved settings.
