Desktop SATA Data Path: Cracked storage socket joint | Auckland
Pattern to record: The drive appears only when pressure changes near the connector.
Identify the connection
Desktop SATA uses a motherboard data port plus a separate drive power connection. Keep the drive identity and port order recorded, especially in a RAID setup, when comparing a cable or port. One possible explanation is that mechanical stress has separated a signal or ground joint from the board.
Protect the drive
Power down before moving internal SATA cables. Pressing on a powered board can create additional shorts.
Workshop checks for this path
- Compare a known cable and port and review interface error counters.
- Inspect anchor and signal joints under magnification with power removed.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, repair the confirmed joint and restore mechanical support. Verification should cover cold boot, sustained transfer, restart, sleep and error counters.
For an assessment of your desktop computer, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
