Find Why an Excel Slicer Cannot Connect to a Second PivotTable
A slicer beside several PivotTables does not automatically control all of them. If one report stays unchanged, first establish whether it is connected and eligible to share that slicer. Repeatedly clicking the same button cannot resolve a different source relationship.
Work in a copy of the dashboard. List the PivotTables that should respond and the question each answers. Record their actual source table or connection rather than only their visible headings. Two reports can both contain a Region field while reading different data.
Inspect the available report connections
In desktop Excel for Windows, select the existing slicer and open its Slicer tab, then Report Connections. Inspect the listed PivotTables and check the intended eligible reports. Microsoft states that a shared slicer can connect only to PivotTables using the same data source.
If the desired report is absent, compare its source with the report that already responds. Do not rename a field or copy the slicer's appearance as a substitute for resolving that difference. Plan any report rebuild in the working copy and preserve its existing calculations and layout for comparison.
For a small rehearsal, prepare two PivotTables from one practice source and a third from a separate source. If a slicer is needed, select the first PivotTable, choose Insert, Slicer, select Region and confirm. Reopen Report Connections and record which reports are offered before selecting anything further.
Check every intended consumer
Use practice records where East and West have obviously different amounts. For example, the shared source can contain East 10 and West 30. Let one report show the sum and another count the records. With East selected, expect the intended reports to describe 10 units and one record, not the same numeric total.
Inspect the third report too. An unchanged report can be appropriate when it is deliberately independent; the problem is presenting it as if it shares the selection. Place it clearly or label its separate context so viewers cannot infer a filter connection that does not exist.
Use the slicer's Clear Filter button to remove its selection, then recheck the reports. In the practice shared source, the full amount is 40 across two records. Record other active filters if they affect those expectations.
For the final dashboard, retain the connection list with the report notes and test each intended PivotTable after a layout or source change. Acceptance concerns the right reports responding to the right selection, not simply a highlighted slicer button.
